about this project:
with autodesk research we developed a full-scale floor–ceiling system that couples a stay-in-place, particle-bed printed wood–magnesia shell with robotically wound flax reinforcement and a cast geopolymer compression layer. the printed formwork integrates bosses for winding, ribbing, and service conduits; a stress field from the slab analysis drives shell thickness and a single continuous winding path, then the 3 mm flax is impregnated and cast over. the 4 m prototype was printed in 2 h 29 min with about ±3 mm accuracy and proved the end-to-end feasibility at architectural scale, including powder recovery and a clean on-part winding workflow. the result is a lightweight system that eliminates conventional formwork, avoids steel corrosion, reduces waste, and folds structure, acoustics, and services into one element.
additive tectonics develops the future of construction: architectural 3D printing. From vision to realisation, across art, architecture and design, our strength is to introduce creatives, architects and other builders to the vast technological and ecological possibilities of today.
Let’s create the built environment of tomorrow together.
